Nissan Terra Concept takes zero emissions off road

Nissan already has the Xterra, but from the looks of it, its new Paris Motor Show concept vehicle could be called the eTerra. In reality, Nissan's new off-road-ready, fuel cell concept is known simply as the Terra Concept, and while it sounds like there are no plans to build such a vehicle just yet, it doesn't hurt to dream.
The Terra Concept has a style that instantly reminds us of the Juke and of the 2009 Qazana concept utility that previewed it – but its tall stance shows that it means business on the trail. As an electric four-wheel-drive vehicle, the Terra uses three separate motors, with the front wheels being driven by the same system currently used in the Nissan Leaf and the rear wheels driven by two motors powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The benefit of such a system means that in everyday driving, the front wheels can do most of the work, and when added traction is needed, the rear motors can kick in to power through whatever terrain it comes across.
In terms of the interior, the TeRRa Concept looks the part with a futuristic cabin, and having the motors independently mounted at the front and rear means that designers have been able to fit a flat load floor for improved cargo potential.
Nissan points out that hydrogen fuel cell stacks cost far less than they did just seven years ago, and it sounds like the only thing limiting Nissan from having a fuel-cell vehicle right now is the lack of a proper hydrogen fuel infrastructure. And even that might not be a limitation – we already know that Nissan is working on delivering a fuel-cell vehicle vehicle by 2015.
The best part of an electric fuel-cell off-road vehicle like the Terra Concept hints at is that, as a zero-emission vehicle, that sounds like the ultimate way to "Tread Lightly" to us.

Nissan’s TeRRA: A zero emission SUV
THE Nissan TeRRA SUV concept, to be unveiled on September 27 at the Paris Motor Show, combines two outstanding Nissan strengths –– sport utility vehicles (SUV) and electric vehicles (EV) –– in a vehicle that is equally in its element off-road or gliding silently through the city.
Report by Autoworld
With an innovative 4×4 fuel-cell electric powertrain and an athletic exterior that has presence beyond its compact dimensions, TeRRA takes sustainable motoring into exciting new territory.
Building on Nissan’s success with crossovers like the Juke and Qashqai, and its EV success with the Leaf, the TeRRA shows that Nissan’s zero-emission expertise encompasses fuel cells too. It is designed as a functional and flexible choice for tomorrow’s youthful, “always on” consumers, bringing with it eco-friendliness along with a secure driving feel under any road conditions.
“Our challenge was to take Nissan’s strength in SUVs and crossovers forward into the zero-emissions era, fuel cells being our new frontier in zero emission mobility,” said Francois Bancon, Nissan’s division general manager of product strategy and planning.
Although TeRRA is presented as a design concept, not a technical exhibit, its proposed 4×4 fuel cell electric powertrain is far from imaginary. Powering the front wheels is the electric propulsion system currently featured in the Nissan Leaf. In each back wheel, providing all-wheel power as needed, is an in-wheel electric motor. As no drive shafts are required to power the rear wheels, there is no hump in the floor or on the underbody. This allows for the flat boot floor and the underside bodypan.
Under the bonnet is ample space for Nissan’s hydrogen fuel cell stack: a flat, highly compact unit that features world-leading power density of 2,5kW/L. The latest in a series of Nissan fuel cells since 1996, the stack costs just one-sixth of its 2005 predecessor as the need for expensive precious metals has been slashed to one-quarter of the previous level.
TeRRA is purely a concept car, but it signals that Nissan is ready to mass-produce fuel cell electric vehicles whenever hydrogen becomes widely available.

FACELIFTED 370Z: Simpler, more aggressive grille and new alloy wheels are part of the redesign.
It goes on sale in the United States in June as a 2013 model.
It has a revamped front bumper with vertical LED daytime running lights and a simpler intake grille, and a red reflector to the rear transom that replaces the previous black panel.
The car rides on newly designed 18-inch wheels, with the Sport models gaining fresh 19-inch items, as well as red brake calipers, and Euro-tuned shock absorbers.
There are new colours, but the engine and gearbox are the same.
